About Switch Digest
Inception
The idea for Switch Digest took shape when its facilitator was asked: "How are you even surviving?!" and "Why do you have to be so special?" after revealing to a small group that he no longer uses X and Y Big Tech services. With a robot voice and stilted movements, he replied "I was already alive and fully operational long before those companies existed. I think I will manage.”
He reflected on the psychological, financial, and technical traps of depending on a handful of Big Tech ecosystems. Questions emerged:
- Is Big Tech’s grip on our lives so tight that we can’t function without them? Are we okay with this?
- What would motivate others to at least explore other options?
- Am I really "special" and a radical, or a part of a quiet movement?
- How can I show a growing movement away from (or toward) dominant Big Tech ecosystems without collecting a single byte of personal data?
The answer is Switch Digest, a public, anonymous ledger of real people stepping back from Big Tech monopolies, covering everything from email and search engines to mobile operating systems and cloud storage.
